Latin American Festival Bondi

The iconic Latin American Festival celebrates a win in the Bondi Pavilion upgrade with a fiesta of family, food and fundraising.

2018 marks the 39 th anniversary for Bondi’s iconic and beloved Latin American Festival. As always, the day will be full of colour, music, food and fun for all the family! There will also be special Piña Coladas, in both alcoholic and virgin varieties, on sale to raise money for the building of much needed new wells for parts of Puerto Rico that are still without clean water 6 months after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on 20th August 2017 when 155mph winds tore across the island destroying thousands of homes, killing up to 1100 people and wiping out critical infrastructure. Maria utterly crippled Puerto Rico. Thousands of Puerto Ricans are still without power and clean water. A report recently released by the EPA notes that “approximately 76,000 residents currently rely on drinking water that might be contaminated with raw sewage and over two-thirds of the population is at risk of exposure to bacterial contamination in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria”. Latin American Festival’s
organiser and Bondi Beach Radio General Manager, Christopher “Caraz” Roserio (aka DJ Caraz), is a proud Puerto Rican native and has endured months of heart-wrenching reports from family and friends detailing the devastation and dismal living conditions on the island. In response to this, Caraz and the Latin American Festival are proud to donate proceeds from the festival to the building of wells on parts of the island that are in dire need of fresh drinking water.

To this end, amidst the fun and flare of the Latin American Festival there will be very special Pina Coladas on sale during the festival. The Piña Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico and is a celebrated part of the Puerto Rican experience. The Piña Coladas on offer will be available with Bacardi Rum or virgin so that all the family can enjoy them and band together in the true Latin American fashion, to help to improve the lives of those on Puerto Rico who so desperately need it.

The Latin American Festival is all about family, community and celebrating the vibrancy and joy that so typifies the Latin American spirit. In celebration of the recent passionate community win for arts and culture in the upgrade plans for the Bondi Pavilion, the festival will once again fill the unique Bondi Association for Arts and Music and Bondi beach Radio proudly presents multi-room space with crowd favorites including free Latin dance lessons, the best of Sydney’s live Latin bands and DJ’s across multiple stages, markets and stalls boasting a huge selection of face painting, hair braiding, crafts, art, and fashion, traditional folkloric performances, an under 18’s disco and the Bondi Beach Radio Local Vocal Lounge featuring vibrant Latin influenced musical talent from the local Eastside Sydney area.

To celebrate the 39 th anniversary, the 2018 Latin American Festival will feature the very first festival parade, based on the bold and colourful parades famous in Latin America including Dia de los Muertos (Mexico), Oruruo (Bolivia), and Carnivale in Brazil, a number of Latin dance schools, folkloric groups, and passionate cultural ambassadors. The parade begins at midday from the back of the Bondi Pavilion around the foreshore parklands, and across the Promenade to open the festival doors.

This year’s festival also features some of Sydney’s best Latin influenced street food vendors, including Sofrito Paella famous, traditional paella, Brazilian Flame’s mouth-watering BBQ meats and marinades, tacos and nachos from Pablo’s Kitchen, and many others with delicious morsels on offer, including Venezuelan-style arepas, delicious corn cakes filled with many different toppings and fillings, and a range of Empanada’s.

With early bird tickets already sold out, 2018 is going to be the Latin American Festival’s biggest, brightest and very best year yet and will once again draw thousands to the beautiful Bondi Pavilion com rain hail or shine – it’s 39 years of Latin American Culture on the best beach in the world!
