With jagged high ground and scattered valleys, the Dominican Republic, between the Carribean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. It shares the island with Haiti. Explored by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492, the highest point in the country is Pico Duarte with its lowest point at Lake Enriquillo.

With a population of almost 10 million, the Caribbean nation is a major tourist destination. Its coastline is dominated by luxurious resorts that, while all-inclusive, reflect a milder version of major tourist spot Cancun.

Tobacco, sugar & coffee are its main exports and like most nations in the Caribbean its people are of mixed European and African origins. Its western influence is reflected in the colonial buildings in Santo Domingo, the capital, and its African heritage is clearly visible in its music (the country is famous for merengue).
