On Sunday, August 28th, 2016, a charity group called Uruguayos Unidos, presented the Uruguayan Festival at Fairfield Showground (Sydney). Since 1989, the Uruguayan Festival, which serves to celebrate the small South American country’s independence, has taken place to raise tens of thousands of dollars for medical institutions in Uruguay and Australia. The charity group is run wholly by volunteers and operates on donations and fundraisers. This year close to 3,000 entries were sold! With the inclusion of various other Latin American countries supporting the festival, this years event was a success.
We were treated to wonderful performances from Latin American groups including but not limited to Comparsa Yauguru, Comparsa Urumbe, Sabor Boliviano, popular band Kandela, and GGY School of Dance. And the food, as always, was tasty. With the largest “parilla” (BBQ) we’ve ever seen, traditional foods including “asado”, “chorizo al pan”, and barbecued chicken were on offer. Sweet delicacies, like the famous churros, “postre chaja” and “bizcochos” were perfect as the sun came down and the show continued into the evening.
Congratulations to all the volunteers that helped ensure the day was a success. We will definitely be seeing you next year!
